You Deserve to Feel Better.

Traumatic Brain Injury, TBI, is an alteration in brain function following blunt trauma to the head or whiplash.

In 2010, about 2.5 million emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, or deaths were associated with TBI—either alone or in combination with other injuries—in the United States. Most recently, the New York Times reported that “After steady declines over the past 4 decades, highway fatalities in 2015 represented the largest annual percentage increase in 50 years. In the first 6 months of 2016, highway deaths jumped another 10.4%”. These statistics would also suggest that TBI is on the rise due to the huge increase in numbers of technology distracted drivers.

TBI is the major cause of disability, prevalence of overall ill health, and mortality among individuals younger than 45 years.

Symptoms include:

  • short term memory deficits

  • headaches

  • limited attention span

  • anxiety and depression

  • impaired motor coordination

  • impairments of perception

  • spasticity of muscles

  • sexual dysfunction

  • sluggish thinking

  • impaired communication skills

  • paralysis

  • impaired concentration

  • lowered self-esteem

  • mood swings

  • impaired vision and hearing

  • seizure disorders

  • restlessness

  • balance issues

  • lack of motivation

  • fatigue

  • impaired judgement

  • difficulty controlling emotions

Each one of these symptoms is the result of a dysregulated brain. Living with these symptoms is devastating for the person with the TBI as well as for family and friends. Some of these symptoms may appear right away, while others may not be noticed for days, months, even years after the injury.

Often, the TBI goes undiagnosed since even an MRI can “miss” the trauma imposed on the brain by blunt force or whiplash. The symptoms are apparent, but the lack of a definitive diagnosis can cause the TBI individual to feel “crazy” and filled with guilt and shame.
